Description
Brian Reed and Hamza Syed on The Trojan Horse Affair
Brian Reed is the host and co-creator of the groundbreaking podcast S-Town. Reed was also a longtime producer at the public radio show and podcast This American Life, where he oversaw the show for years as its senior producer alongside host Ira Glass.
Reed teamed up with new journalist Hamza Syed to co-host the eight-part podcast The Trojan Horse Affair, an investigation into who authored a mysterious letter that wreaked havoc in Britain in 2014. Syed was a journalism student when he and Reed started reporting The Trojan Horse Affair, and their dynamic and friendship has prompted critics to praise the series as a “buddy comedy” of investigative journalism. The Trojan Horse Affair spent weeks as number one on the podcast charts, was downloaded more than 13 million times in its first month and stirred controversy in Britain – prompting calls for a public inquiry and the reopening of legal cases while politicians were denouncing the series in the House of Lords.
On Thursday 16 November 2023 Brian Reed and Hamza Syed will give a masterclass prior to the VVOJ Conference in Ghent.
For this masterclass we have a morning session and an afternoon session planned, so the masterclass takes place twice this day and people can attend either one of them.
Each session allows a maximum of 20 participants.
If you register for this session, we expect you to listen to The Trojan Horse Affair prior to the masterclass and send us three questions for Brian and Hamza (in English) about their journalistic process. Deadline for sending in the questions: latest Tuesday 7 November 2023.
Please note that the session is in English.
Details of the session will follow.
Possible things to expect in this masterclass are:
- The different investigative methods that they used for this story and the learning process that Hamza went through using these methods as a young journalist.
- How to use of narrative/storytelling in investigative journalism.
- The dynamics between Brian, a seasoned and experienced journalist and Hamza, starting out as a journalist.
- Both their views on investigative journalism and their roles as journalists.
